NIK RUSKUC - CURRICULUM VITAE
(updated April 12, 2013)
SUMMARY
My contact with mathematics beyond the normal school
level began with mathematical Olympiads.
It grew quickly into a fascination with the subject,
and, by the age of 15, I was determined to try and
become a university teacher.
In secondary school I won several
provincial and state Olympiads,
participated in one International Mathematical Olympiad,
won numerous school prizes and completed
two final years in one.
Next, I completed a four year undergraduate course
at the University of Novi Sad
in less than three years, scoring maximal possible marks
in all but three of the exams, and obtaining
prizes in each year.
During my Ph.D. studies at the University of St Andrews,
in which I studied semigroup presentations,
I published more than ten papers,
gave several talks at various seminars and conferences,
and completed the degree in two and a half
years.
I have subsequently held a number of temporary and permanent positions in
the School of Mathematics and Statistics.
Currently I am Professor of Mathematics and Head of School.
I have continued working on semigroup presentations,
and also extended my interests into a number of related
areas such as automatic structures,
combinatorics of permutations and general/universal algebra.
I have written
over 100 publications, most in leading international journals,
delivered
over 50 invited lectures,
collaborated with over 40 mathematicians,
supervised 28 Ph.D. students and won
several research grants.
My lecture courses are very popular with students,
three of whom won prizes for their projects,
and many of whom continue with postgraduate studies.

Achievements:
The Algebra Research Group is one of the largest and most dynamic algebra groups in the UK.
It has had
outstanding success in producing high quality publications,
recruiting postgraduate students (13 in 2003/04, against a declining
national trend), attracting external funding and collaborations.
Pure Mathematics Division received a Grade 5 in the 2001 RAE; it
has also made significant progress
in attracting students into the courses for which it is responsible, and changing the students'
perception of the subject matter as being hard and technical.
These, of course, are achievements of all the staff involved,
and I do not claim any special credit, except, perhaps, for consciously
encouraging the development of a dynamic, enthusiastic and friendly environment.
I do, however, believe that my efficient and purposeful handling of administration
has contributed to the success of all the above bodies.
RESEARCH
Statement:
My research covers a wide area within the fields of
Algebra, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science.
In my opinion these fields have played a crucial role in the 20th century Mathematics:
they have provided an umbrella for the fundamental results on incompleteness and undecidability,
and, at the same time, the necessary language and methodology for the
emerging computer technology.
Spanning these there is a vast area scattered with gems of knowledge.
I see my research work as looking, together with my collaborators and students,
for these gems, discovering and classifying them. And, while searching,
we are constantly developing and re-inventing
the underlying mathematical language.
Research interests:
semigroup presentations;
combinatorics on permutations and words;
group presentations;
transformation semigroups;
algorithmic and computational methods in algebra;
automatic structures;
formal languages and automata;
universal algebra.
